DISCIPLINE TWO · INWARD FACING

The Operator

Turn performance into a system leadership can see.

The Operator is the second discipline in The Presales BOAT System™. It makes Presales results predictable, so problems surface while there’s still time to change the outcome.

What needs to be visible so problems surface before they become surprises?

Talent is not a strategy

A Presales team built around a handful of exceptional people will produce exceptional results exactly as often as those people happen to be available, rested, and in the room. For a while that looks like strength. Revenue climbs, headcount grows, and nobody asks what’s holding it all up.

The Operator asks. It turns good individual performance into predictable organizational performance, with standards that hold when your strongest SC is on vacation, metrics that show whether the work is having an effect, and enough visibility to step in while a deal can still be saved.

None of this replaces judgment. It protects judgment from having to make up for a broken process, so a good Solution Consultant can focus on the customer in front of them instead of quietly rebuilding infrastructure that should already exist. Like the Builder, the Operator faces inward, toward the practice you run.

STORY FROM THE FIELD

One Resignation Away

A regional Presales team had doubled in size over two years, and leadership assumed growth was working. Revenue was up. Headcount was up. Nobody noticed the group was running on three or four exceptional individuals who were quietly covering everyone else’s gaps.

Then one of them resigned. Within weeks, deal quality slipped and coaching became inconsistent. The wins that had looked like organizational strength turned out to have been one person’s strength all along.

The SC manager didn’t go looking for another standout performer. He went looking for the systems his team relied on every day, and he found almost none. Each manager coached differently, every consultant had invented their own process, whoever escalated loudest got attention, and nothing important happened on a schedule anyone could predict.

What he rebuilt first, what he stopped measuring, and what his team’s win rate looked like six months later is the story that opens Chapter 8.
